Full form of CGPA its calculation and conversion

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)is a numerical measure of performance in multiple subjects and semesters in certain academic time period. CGPA is assigned to students at end of academic year for performance evaluation.Unlike the SGPA or GPA that measures the performance in a specific semester or subject CGPA gives  an overall view of your standings in certain field.

How CGPA is calculated

There is certain formula to calculate CGPA:

CGPA = CGPA = ∑ (Gi x Ci)/∑ Ci

Factors upon which CGPA depends:

Grade points(Gi): Grade point is the value assigned to a specific course that is based on marks usually on a scale of 10 or 4 depending upon the educational grading system. For example on 10 grade scale marks are assigned the grades like this:

90 -100 marks = 10 grade points

80 – 89 marks = 9 grade points

70 – 79 marks = 8 grade points

60 – 69 marks = 7 grade points and so on

Credit points(Ci):

Credit points are numbers allocated according to the priority of the course e.g. if physics is your main subject then,

14 credit hours for physics,

Total weighted grade points:

Multiply grade points with credit hours to get total grade points in a specific academic course.

Steps to Calculate CGPA from Individual Grades

  1. list down all subjects that you have chosen for your career.
  2. You should know about the grades that are assigned to you in your transcript against these courses.
  3. now convert your grades to grade points according to the grading scale.
  4. you also have the credit hours or points against each subject or course.
  5. now multiply each grade point with each credit point to get weighted grade points in specific courses
  6. add up all course results and divide it by total credit points to get CGPA.

CGPA Grading Scales

educational institutions use different grading scales to assign grades to students. According to the grading scale grades for example A, B, C, and so on are assigned. Each grade is assigned a numerical value according to the grading scale which is the grade point that is used for CGPA competition.

Most common grading scales are grade 10, Grade 5 and Grdae 4.

4 Grading scale:

this ranges from 0 to 4 and is commonly used in United state institutions.

Conversion of CGPA to Percentage and Vice Versa

CGPA is converted to percentage very easily. There is general factor that is 9.5 that is used for conversion. CGPA is multiplied by 9.5 for percentage conversion.

PERCENTAGE=CGPA*9.5

However, this conversion factor may change according to the policies of universities.

Percentage to CGPA:

with the same reverse formula, you can get cgpa from percentage.

CGPA=percentage/9.5

Factors affecting CGPA:

  • Course Grades: grades that you achieved in a specific subject directly affect your cgpa
  • Credit Hours: Credit hours are assigned according to the priority of a subject in a certain field. Having more credit hours has a great effect on your CGPa.
  • GPA grading System: Educational institutions use different grading scales according to their policies, such as 10, 5, or 4. That also impacts your GPA.
  • Grading Policies: Policies like weighted grades, pass/fail options, or retake allowances can influence CGPA.
  • Semester Performance: cgpa is a combination of multiple semesters GPAs that’s why each semester gpa affects GPA.
  • Cumulative Credits: The total number of credits earned and attempted over your academic career also affects your CGPA.
  • Transfer Credits: Credits transferred from other institutions may impact CGPA calculations.
  • Repeating Courses: Repeating courses to improve grades may affect CGPA positively or negatively depending on institutional policies

Final words

“CGPA, or Cumulative Grade Point Average, sums up your overall academic performance across different subjects and semesters. It combines grades and credits to give a complete picture of how well you’re doing in your studies. With various grading scales used worldwide, CGPA serves as a universal tool for students to understand their academic achievements, beyond just individual grades or semesters. It’s a straightforward way to see where you stand in your educational journey.”
